Organizing an event doesn’t have to be challenging or stressful. Discover how our Event Consulting services revitalized a decade-old annual public gathering, accommodating 500 attendees with on-site tours during a bustling Saturday afternoon.

The Client

Ecowaste Industries Ltd., a privately owned Canadian company, engaged Sharon Bonner Consulting to revitalize their annual event on Saturday, September 7, 2024. Seeking a fresh perspective for this recurring gathering, Ecowaste aimed to enhance the event’s appeal and effectiveness through expert consultation.

A little about them

With 50 years of experience in waste management, Ecowaste operates a 160-hectare landfill that handles waste from construction, demolition, and excavation projects. The company also prioritizes commercial recycling, offering wood recycling and waste transfer solutions.

The Ecowaste Landfill accepts inert refuse, primarily from construction and demolition sites. It also functions as a transfer depot for drywall, cardboard, metals, and clean wood, ensuring proper processing instead of direct disposal.

Since 1971, Ecowaste has provided Richmond with essential waste management, remaining a key sustainable disposal site in the Lower Mainland.

Their Main Objective

The event aimed to raise waste management awareness, promote anti-waste practices, and advocate for transforming landfills into commercial hubs.

Raising Public Awareness: It is crucial to educate the community about the environmental and economic impacts of waste. By highlighting the consequences of excessive waste and the benefits of sustainable practices, the event aimed to foster a culture of environmental responsibility. Tours were conducted for the guests throughout the day. Informed citizens are more likely to adopt behaviors that contribute to waste reduction and environmental preservation.

Promoting Anti-Waste Practices: Encouraging behaviors that minimize waste generation is essential for sustainable development. The event showcased practical strategies such as precycling—making purchasing decisions that reduce waste at the source—and reusing materials to extend their lifecycle. This was demonstrated in our Donation Tent. These practices not only conserve natural resources but also reduce pollution and decrease the volume of waste destined for landfills.

Transforming Landfills into Productive Commercial Communities: Repurposing closed landfills into functional commercial spaces presents a forward-thinking approach to land use, and EcoWaste is doing this. Such transformations can revitalize local economies, create job opportunities, and restore environmental integrity. By converting these sites into productive assets, communities can address land scarcity issues and promote sustainable urban development.

These objectives sought to inspire engagement, promote sustainability, and showcase innovative waste management solutions.

Winning People Over

Ecowaste created the event to bridge the gap with the community. We aimed to showcase the value and potential of investing in old landfills for positive purposes, such as building new warehouses, treating the soil, and recycling metal and paint.

The event’s success shone through in the community’s enthusiasm and shared commitment to environmental stewardship.

The Event

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the Ecowaste Open House welcomed a vibrant crowd eager to explore and engage with the company’s rich history and sustainable initiatives. Central to the event was the Ecowaste tent, where attendees gathered around detailed poster boards chronicling the landfill’s evolution since its inception in 1971. For many Richmond residents, this historical journey offered a nostalgic glimpse into the community’s past, deepening their connection to the present.

Adjacent to this, the Donation Tent buzzed with activity. It showcased an array of items recovered from the landfill, each with the potential for repurposing. Visitors marveled at the possibilities, discovering hidden gems among the salvaged materials. This interactive display highlighted the value of recycling and inspired attendees to envision new life for discarded items.

The event’s success was evident in the enthusiastic participation and meaningful conversations sparked among community members, who rallied around the shared goal of environmental stewardship.
